Hope in Darkness

Psalm 23 tells us that even when walking through the valley of the shadow of death, we need not fear. Because God is with us, we have eternal hope.

"Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me." (Psalm 23:4)

David wrote these words during the darkest period of his life. He was hunted by King Saul, wandering in exile, yet he could speak such words of faith. Why? Because he knew God was with him.

Life always has dark moments. Job loss, illness, broken relationships, loss of loved ones—these are the "valleys of shadow" we may face. In these moments, it's easy to be overwhelmed by despair, feeling there's no way out, no hope.

But Scripture tells us darkness is not the end of the story. John 1:5 says: "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. When we feel the darkest, that's when we need to grasp this truth.

I think of Job's story. He lost everything—property, children, health. His friends accused him, his wife urged him to curse God and die. In such desperation, Job said: "I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth." (Job 19:25)

Job's hope wasn't based on changing circumstances but on God's character. He knew God is faithful, God is good, and God's plans are perfect. Even in the darkest moments, he chose to believe.

Romans 8:28 says: "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him." This doesn't mean all things are good, but that God can use everything—including pain and difficulties—to bring us good.

When my mother was diagnosed with cancer, the whole family was shrouded in fear. But during that difficult treatment process, we saw God's grace, saw genuine human relationships, saw what truly matters in life. Those dark days actually made us cherish each other more and depend on God more.

Our hope lies not in changing circumstances but in God's unchanging love. He promises to walk with us, to be our strength when we're weak, and that our latter days will be better than our former days.

Even in the deepest darkness, we can sing hallelujah because we know dawn will surely come.
